I am experiencing an issue in which I am unable to type in any windows that Aqua Data Studio opens. For example, if I click File -> Save and the save dialog window opens, I am unable to type in the filename text field. I can click buttons and close the window but the text input cursor remains on the main Aqua Data Studio window. This happens with all windows that Aqua Data Studio opens, such as the Save Dialog, the Rename Tab dialog, the Execute Edit window, etc. Any window that Aqua Data Studio opens in which there is a place to type, I am unable to get the cursor to focus in the newly opened window - anything I type ends up in the main window.
This issue appears after I have had Aqua Data Studio open for a few minutes and I have opened a few windows, such as Rename Tab or Save, etc. I am able to use the first few windows, but after the first few, it stops working and I am unable to get focus into them. In order to fix this I have to quit the app and relaunch it, which is obviously very inconvenient.
I am using Aqua Data Studio version 19.0.0, Build # 55797 on a MacBook Pro running MacOS 10.13.3. This issue was happening with version 18.5.0 and I upgraded, hoping that it would be resolved but still persists.
In my opinion, this may be a MacOS / Java issue, but I have no way of proving that, it is just a theory.
Please let me know if you would like any additional information from me.

Hi Kent,
Would it be ok if our support team contacts you directly via email to work on this issue? This way we can track the support case and gather logs and information regarding your system.
Thanks, Tom
Yes, of course. I would be happy to help troubleshoot this in any way that I can.
I have some more information that is relevant to this issue. As I mentioned in my original report, this issue occurs after Aqua Data Studio has been open for a while. I have noticed that if I close my laptop and let it sleep for a while, the issue sometimes goes away and I am able to type in additional windows, such as renaming tabs, etc. for a short time, but then it stops working again.
I have also noticed that the Git Commit window always works, even when this issue is occurring; when I am unable to rename tabs or enter a name for saving a query, I am still able to enter comments in the Git Commit window.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help with troubleshooting this problem. I can not stress how critical it is that this issue gets resolved - it is beginning to make using Aqua Data Studio very cumbersome for me and my team, as we are constantly having to close and re-launch the app in order to restore basic functionality.

Are there any updates on this issue? My team and I are all still experiencing it on the latest version of MacOS (10.13.6) and it is getting to the point that we are going to have to look for another solution if this can't be fixed. Please let us know if anyone is going to work on this or if we should start looking elsewhere.

Hi,
Yes, I verified and ADS is using the old version of Java. Here is what the Support Information window says:
Operating Environment: Mac OS X (10.13.6, x86_64) / UTF-8 / en / US / Oracle Corporation 1.8.0_40-b27
Memory: Max=704,643,072; Total=252,706,816; Free=141,613,920; CPUs=8
I will download the new version from Oracle and let you know how it goes.
Thanks

Bad news… I still have the same problem with the updated Java version. I tried to do an Object Search and it stopped working immediately; I am unable to type in the Search For box and the Help menu us all grayed out.
Please let me know if there is anything else you would like me to try.

I tried it but the issue still exists. I disabled Charts, as described below, quit ADS, restarted it, went to Tools -> Object Search, selected a database and when the search window came up I was not able to type in the Search text box. I closed the search window and verified that the Help menu was all grayed out too (these symptoms seem to go hand-in-hand).

Hi Asif,
Can you have a look at this issue and see if there is something that I missed? It seems to only be an issue for this team. Not sure what is different.
Thanks in advance, Tom

I have an update on this issue... I noticed this morning that when this issue occurs, if I use Cmd-` to switch windows (i.e. I switch from the Search window to the main ADS window and then back to the Search window) I am then able to type in the Search For text box.
This did NOT work before... I tried many times to switch back and forth between windows using Cmd-` but the text box would never get focus. Unfortunately I have not tried that for a while, since I knew it did not work, so I am not sure which of the changes that you asked me to make may have helped with this problem.
I apologize for not trying to swap windows with Cmd-` after each thing we tested, so we don't know which thing we did caused this change, but at least now I have a workaround.
In case it helps, here is the relevant Support Information from ADS:
Product: Aqua Data Studio Version: 19.0.2 Build #: 55969 Build Date: 2018-Aug-14 12:32:14 PM Operating Environment: Mac OS X (10.14, x86_64) / UTF-8 / en / US / Oracle Corporation 1.8.0_181-b13 Memory: Max=704,643,072; Total=242,745,344; Free=104,760,552; CPUs=8
I updated to the latest JVM a few weeks ago; it did not fix the issue but perhaps that is what helped with the CMD-` workaround.
Please let me know if you need any additional information from me.

Hi,
I tested File > Save, Tab > Rename scenarios on my box and I am unable to reproduce this issue.

Hi, sorry for the delay. I have attached the content of what I get in the View Log and the SQL Log when I open the Object Search window. I generated these logs by closing ADS, then re-opening it and trying to open an Object Search window. The first time I opened the window it worked fine - I was able to type in the Search field - but when I closed the window and then tried it a second time, I got the NullPointerException error that you will see in the ViewLog file.
Just recently, I started having another similar issue: if I let ADS sit for too long with the cursor in the results window of a query (the results were in text) I am unable to get the input focus to go back to the query window. No matter what I click, everything I type goes into the results window. This has only happened a couple of times and I just restarted ADS to remedy it.
In your previous email you asked me to verify what database I am working with. If you mean which DB Engine, the answer is that about 90% of the times I use SQL Server 2016 and about 10% of the time I use MySQL 5.7.21.
I wanted to mention that I also run another Java application on my laptop quite frequently called MoneyDance and it does not have any of these window focus issues. I am not sure if somehow two Java apps running simultaneously could be causing issues (I doubt it) but I wanted to mention it just for the sake of thoroughness - as far as I can tell, these issues are on occurring with ADS.

Hi Kent,
I am also unable to reproduce the issue on my Mac, even with the older JRE.

Can you please try increasing your JVM memory to 2048MB? Sometimes when memory is low, strange things can happen. This is done by right-clicking on the Aqua Data Studio app and select Show Package Contents, then edit the Info.plist in the Contents folder and change the -Xmx parameter value. Please see the attached JVM-memory.png. You'll have to restart ADS in order to this to take effect.
Another thing to try is to reboot your Mac. Sometimes my Mac behaves strangely when I haven't reboot it in a long time.

I increased the JVM memory size as described but still had the same issues. As I mentioned recently, the problem seems to be getting worse now. For example, just now when I tested it after having increased the JVM memory size, not only did I have the same issue of not being able to click on the Search field in the Object Search window, I was not able to close the Object Search window. Clicking the close window button in the window frame would not do anything - I had to just quit ADS completely.

I just added a zip file with the logs from our debugging session today to this issue. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.
Thanks again for your time in looking into this.

Hi Kent,
Can you check the following to see if any accessibility tools are creating the issue? Not likely, but worth a try.

Hi Tom,
I did have a few apps enabled for accessibility. I have disabled all of them so I will restart ADS and try it again over the next few days and let you know how it goes.
Additionally, I was able to capture a screen video as well as the datastudio.log files for the other issue that I mentioned to you, where after reconnecting a tab that has timed out the focus gets "split". When this happens, any letters that I type will appear in the query window but any special characters that I type, such as backspace, will have effect in the query results window.
Please let me know if you would like me to post the logs and/or video that I took showing the split focus issue.
I will let you know in a couple of days how ADS is behaving now that I have disabled the accessibility apps.
Thanks again for all of your support!

Hi Tom,
After disabling accessibility for all apps and restarting ADS, I am still experiencing the focus issues that I described to you earlier. I have captured a video and the log files from an example, showing the split focus issue I described in my previous comment. I will attach the log file to this issue - here is a link to the video that I recorded of my screen when this was happening.
Thanks
