The most common Shape Chart is a Scatter Chart or Scatter Plot. Scatter Charts use Cartesian coordinates to display values for two variables for a set of data and are a useful summary of bivariate data.
To create a Scatter Chart:
1. Execute a select * within the Query Analyzer on the bistudio_example.xlsx file.
2. Click the [Visual Analytics] button in the Grid Results.
3. Drag Freight to Columns
4. Drag Profit to Rows
5. Choose [Shape] from the Chart Properties Chart Type dropdown
6. Click the [Shape] button in the Chart Properties and choose the hollow circle.
7. Drag City to Color
8. Choose [Analysis > Show Data Labels] in the menu toolbar.
Hollow shapes allow you to see more values in a Scatter Chart than solid shapes because they don't completely obscure values underneath or nearby.
Bubble Chart
To make Bubble Charts (a variation of a Scatter Chart where the size of the shape indicates a value) you add an additional measure into the [Size] button of the Chart Properties.
Using the Scatter Chart you made above:
1. Drag Total Due from Measures into the [Size] button of the Chart Properties. This alters the circles so that their size represents the sum of Total Due for each City.
2. Click the [Shape] button in the Chart Properties and choose the solid circle.
3. Because there are so many cities that are part of our City Dimension, create a filter for City and check only the top three cities in the Filter deck.
Notice the Profit and Freight Axes in your Bubble Chart are of a different range than your Scatter Chart. Visual Analytics automatically sets the Axes ranges to present only what is needed for the Filters you choose.
