It would be nice if you could create your own Date Formats and save them including setting which Date Format (custom or built-in) should be as the default for display. Note this request is specific to VA as that is more likely to be shared with non-technical resources vs the date/time display used in things like query results.

@jason: In VA, under the Dimensions pane for a Date Field, you can right click and select the option Default Properties -> Date Format. You can add your custom date format for display.
See attached screenshots.
Yes, I'm aware of that, what I was looking for was the ability to define a set of frequently used Custom Date formats for re-use-- for instance I use "yyyy-MM-dd" and "yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm" consistently, in addition to being able to set a default for any new usages-- like if I create a new VA Workbook. Currently it requires me to go into the newly created Workbook and for each of my date columns choose Default -> Date Format -> Custom and type in "yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm".

We could add options in File > Options > Appearance for default Date and Date/Time Format for VA.

Would that also allow you to pre-define custom formats? Or maybe even to remove from of the built-in defaults that I'd never use?

This aspect of our interface was modeled after how spreadsheets work. They have many pre-defined formats, which are not editable and then offer an option to enter a custom format as well. The formats we pre-define are also based on locale. For example, if you're running in Germany locale, you'll see a different set of pre-defined formats (also similar to how spreadsheets work).
It seems the improvements you would like to this interface are:
-- Have a way to define in ADStudio (not inside a workbook) a set of formats which will be shown in Visual Analytics.
-- Currently, the default format in a new workbook is always "Automatic". You'd also like the ability to specify in ADStudio than when a new workbook is launched, what is the default date format and the default date/time format that should be applied.

Currently it requires me to go into the newly created Workbook and for each of my date columns choose Default -> Date Format -> Custom and type in "yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm".
One workflow optimization I can suggest is to multi-select your date field and then right click > Default Properties > Date fields ... this will apply your custom format to all selected fields.

Yes, this is exactly what I was looking for!
And thank you for the note on the workflow optimization-- I'll work with that until the day I can create my own global defaults ;)
