Oracle JDBC Drivers

Aqua Data Studio comes bundled with Oracle 12c JDBC drivers. These drivers are compatible with Oracle 12c, 11g and 10g when using the Oracle (non-OCI) connection in Aqua Data Studio. To make an OCI connection or to connect to Oracle 9i or 8i, please follow the appropriate instructions below.

Connecting to Oracle 8i  and 9i using non-OCI Connection

Aqua Data Studio is bundled with the Oracle 12c JDBC drivers. Oracle has discontinued support for Oracle 8i and 9i in their Oracle 12c drivers.  Aqua Data studio still supports Oracle 8i and 9i, but you need to backdrop the Oracle drivers from 12c to 10g. Below are the instructions to backdrop to Oracle 10g drivers. 

1. Shutdown Aqua Data Studio
2. Locate nls_charset12.jar and ojdbc14.jar within your Oracle installation.
3. Delete ojdbc8.jar and orai18n.jar from [ADS_INSTALL]\lib\drivers.

   Note: Renaming the files is not sufficient. You must either delete these files or move them to a directory outside of [ADS_HOME]

4. Copy the nls_charset12.jar and ojdbc14.jar file that you found in step 2 to [ADS_INSTALL]\lib\drivers.
5. Launch ADS and go to Help -> About Aqua Data Studio -> JDBC Drivers and verify that the Oracle Driver is now at version 10.x.

Making an OCI Connection to Oracle 12c/11g/10g/9i/8i

To make an Oracle OCI Connection, you need to ensure that the Oracle JDBC drivers used by ADS are build compatible with the Oracle version you have installed on your machine.

Failing to do this may cause ADS to crash.

The best way to ensure compatibility is to copy the Oracle JDBC drivers from your Oracle Client installation directory into ADS's drivers directory. The set of files that need to copied vary by Oracle version. Please follow the appropriate link based upon the version of Oracle you have installed.

OSX Users: OCI Connections are not supported on OSX. There is no need to change or update the drivers on OSX.

OCI Connection to Oracle 12c Release 2

1. Shutdown Aqua Data Studio

   Warning: If running 32-bit Oracle Client, you must use 32-bit Aqua Data Studio. If running 64-bit Oracle Client, you must use 64-bit Aqua Data Studio.

2. Delete ojdbc8.jar and orai18n.jar from [ADS_INSTALL]\lib\drivers.
   

   Renaming the files is not sufficient. You must either delete these files or move them to a directory outside of [ADS_HOME]

3. Locate the Oracle JDBC driver files from your Oracle Client installation.
   1. ojdbc8.jar: located in [ORACLE_HOME]\jdbc\lib.
   2. orai18n.jar: located in [ORACLE_HOME]\jlib.
4. Copy ojdbc8.jar and orai18n.jar to [ADS_INSTALL]\lib\drivers
5. Launch ADS and go to Help -> About Aqua Data Studio -> JDBC Drivers and verify that for the Oracle Driver, the Major Build Number is "12" and the Minor Build Number matches your Oracle Client version.

OCI Connection to Oracle 12c and Oracle 12c Release 1

1. Shutdown Aqua Data Studio

5. Launch ADS and go to Help -> About Aqua Data Studio -> JDBC Drivers and verify that for the Oracle Driver, the Major Build Number is "12" and the Minor Build Number matches your Oracle Client version.

OCI Connection to Oracle 10g

1. Shutdown Aqua Data Studio

2. Delete ojdbc8.jar and orai18n.jar from [ADS_INSTALL]\lib\drivers.

3. Locate the Oracle JDBC driver files from your Oracle Client installation.
   1. ojdbc14.jar: located in [ORACLE_HOME]\jdbc\lib.

2. Warning: If running 32-bit Oracle Client, you must use 32-bit Aqua Data Studio. If running 64-bit Oracle Client, you must use 64-bit Aqua Data Studio.

3. Delete ojdbc8.jar and orai18n.jar from [ADS_INSTALL]\lib\drivers.
   

   Renaming the files is not sufficient. You must either delete these files or move them to a directory outside of [ADS_HOME]

4. Locate the Oracle JDBC driver files from your Oracle Client installation.
   1. ojdbc14.jar: located in [ORACLE_HOME]\jdbc\lib.
   2. nls_charset12.jar: located in [ORACLE_HOME]\jdbc\lib.
5. Copy ojdbc14.jar and nls_charset12.jar from [ORACLE_HOME]\jdbc\lib to [ADS_INSTALL]\lib\drivers
6. Launch ADS and go to Help -> About Aqua Data Studio -> JDBC Drivers and verify that for the Oracle Driver, the Major Build Number is "9" and the Minor Build Number matches your Oracle Client version.

OCI Connection to Oracle 8i

1. Shutdown Aqua Data Studio

   Warning: If running 32-bit Oracle Client, you must use 32-bit Aqua Data Studio. If running 64-bit Oracle Client, you must use 64-bit Aqua Data Studio.

2. Delete ojdbc8.jar and orai18n.jar from [ADS_INSTALL]\lib\drivers.
   

   Renaming the files is not sufficient. You must either delete these files or move them to a directory outside of [ADS_HOME]

3. Locate the Oracle JDBC driver files from your Oracle Client installation.
   1. classes12.zip: located in [ORACLE_HOME]\jdbc\lib.
   2. nls_charset12.zip: located in [ORACLE_HOME]\jdbc\lib.
4. Copy classes12.zip and nls_charset12.zip from [ORACLE_HOME]\jdbc\lib to [ADS_INSTALL]\lib\drivers and rename their extensions to .jar.

   You must change the .zip file extensions of classes12.zip and nls_charset12.zip to .jar for use in Aqua Data Studio

5. Launch ADS and go to Help -> About Aqua Data Studio -> JDBC Drivers and verify that for the Oracle Driver, the Major Build Number is "8" and the Minor Build Number is what you are expecting.

Troubleshooting OCI Connections

Be sure to follow the above steps first to ensure that you have the proper drivers installed for ADS to make an OCI connection. In most situations, following the above steps will result in successful OCI connection. 

Multiple oracle client drivers in windows path

Be aware that if more than one Oracle client has been installed on the same computer as Aqua Data Studio, you must make sure that only one Oracle Client appears in the windows path. Having multiple versions of the OCI DLLs in the path will prevent Aqua Data Studio from successfully connecting and will generate an error message similar to the following when attempting to make a connection:
